The EEC organised an interview skills workshop on the 12th of February 2012 at the Tabligh auditorium. It was open to everyone in the community regardless of age or employment status. The workshop was conducted by Br. Hassan Dewji, a HR professional who runs a recruitment firm.

Prior to the workshop, each participant’s education level and employment history had been submitted to Br Hassan. This helped him prepare a tailor made workshop suitable to the participants’ needs and requirements. The workshop covered basic interview questions, how to respond to difficult questions, body language, attitude, posture etc. The workshop was very interactive and Br Hassan conducted mock interviews and had the participants participate in role playing. There was a refreshment break in between sessions where participants had the chance to network with other participants. The workshop ended at 11.45pm.

The participant feedback on the workshop was astounding with every participant stating that they thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and gained a lot of valuable information that would help them in their job hunt. Many indicated that they were interested in attending workshops similar to this in the future. The EEC plans on regularly holding workshops similar to this one for members of the community.

The Economic Empowerment Committee held its 2nd Careers Workshop on the 15th of January from 9.30am to 3.30pm at the Tabligh Auditorium. The workshop was aimed at students between the ages of 14 and 20. The day long workshop featured 14 professional from different fields and 2 career counsellors.

The workshop began with a welcome address by Sis Zainab Alidina, a member of the Economic Empowerment Committee. This was followed by an icebreaker game which got all the students to get to know each other better and to interact with the professionals. After a quick summary on the how the workshop was going to be structured, each of the professionals got the chance to introduce themselves and their profession to the participants.

Sis Fatima Sherali, one of the career counsellors for the workshop then introduced the career counselling options the students had and gave out more information on funding available for students who wish to study further. She also explained to the students the different education options they had available to them and how different organisations were willing to sponsor their education via grants and loans. She requested Dr Jiwaji, a professor from Open University and one of the professional for the workshop to speak to the students about the importance of education for future success in their careers. This interactive session with Dr Jiwaji was one of the highlights of the workshop.

The exceptional talk by Dr Jiwaji was followed by a break where participants got the chance to interact with presenters and each other in an informal setting over tea and snacks. Each presenter was then assigned a class room where they would hold their interactive in-depth career information sessions. These sessions were 20-30 minutes each and gave the students a chance to speak to the professionals about their respective careers in a small group setting. These sessions were conducted throughout the day and students got to pick what professionals they wanted to speak to. The career counsellors were also on hand all day speaking to students in one-on-one sessions about their career dilemmas and guiding them on possible options.

At Salah time, the sessions were put on hold while everyone went to pray. After prayers a well-deserved lunch break was taken, the lunch break once again gave the participants and professionals a chance to interact and network with each other over an informal setting. The sessions resumed after lunch, giving students a chance to speak to a few more professionals before the workshop winded down.

Each professional got a chance to hold their in-depth career sessions in their own unique ways; some opted for an informal talk with Q&A after the talk, while others opted for a participants guided talk where participants got a chance to pave the path the talk took. The “careers in media” sessions conducted by Br Mohamedabbas Somji, on the other hand took a different route with video and audio clips of the different careers available in the field. Students got to learn something new from each of the sessions they attended.

The professionals that attended the day workshop to conduct the in-depth career sessions with the students included the following:

Br Murtaza Nasser – accounting

Br Mustafa Tharoo – law

Dr Noorali Jiwaji – physics and astronomy

Br Hasan Dewji – Human Resources and law

Sis Neelam Nathoo – nutrition and Reiki therapy

Sis Zahra Mohamedhussein – medicine

Br Mohammed Abbas Somji – media

Br Miqdaad Ramani – banking

Sis Haleema Lalji – education

Br Irfan Rashid – pharmaceutical and analytical science

Br Assad Amirali – radiology

Br Mudassir Amirali – radiology

Br Hasnein Dinani – banking

Sis Mariam Meghji and Sis Fatima Sherali were the career counsellors.

The workshop was a huge success and the feedback from the students and professionals was remarkable. The EEC would to take this opportunity to once again thank each and every one of the professionals who took time out of their busy schedules to impart valuable information about their careers to all the attendees. We would also like to thank Sis Fatima Sherali for her support throughout the planning stages of this workshop and for volunteering to be one of our career counsellors for the day. The EEC would also like to thank all the participants for their high level of participation and enthusiasm during the workshop.

A special shout out goes to Br Imran Sumar and Br Karrar Rashid for the numerous hours they put in to make this workshop a success. We really could not have done this without their help.

The workshop started off with introductions of the participants and speakers over coffee and light snacks. After a quick summary on how the workshop will progress through the day, Br Murtaza Nasser started his presentation.

Br Murtaza covered the importance of record keeping and accounting in the success of a business. A special emphasis was placed on service-oriented businesses. He also talked about how an entrepreneur can have a healthy work-life-religion balance in his/her life and its importance in the success of the entrepreneur and his/her business. Part of the presentation covered a motivational talk on perseverance and determination being the key to individual and societal success with examples from his earlier years. Br Murtaza’s presentation was very valuable to participants regardless of how far they were from starting up a business.

After the presentation there was a Q&A session where participants got to put forward their queries on the presentation and any other entrepreneurship related topics. As the Q&A drew to a close, participants were asked to write down their reasons for wanting to become entrepreneurs and the driving forces behind this choice.

There was quick coffee break followed by Br Sheni Bandali’s presentation. Br Sheni‘s presentation focused on the importance of adapting to change. He drew examples from his own business venture that he started from scratch and the reasons for its huge success. He also covered the importance of market research and creating a customer orientated environment in the business. The whole focus of this presentation was on the practical day to day managing of the business venture especially from a manufacturing industry point of view.

A Q&A session was held after the presentation where Br Sheni answered many questions participants had on the practical side of starting up and managing a business venture. As the Q&A drew to a close, the buffet lunch was being set up. Participants then took a lunch and prayer break, where after Salaah, a scrumptious buffet lunch was served. The lunch was a great opportunity for participants to network with each other and to get some one on one time with speakers.

After lunch, Br Munir began his presentation with a “carve out your future” assignment where participants were asked to picture what they wanted their life to be like in 2064 and how they were going to spend the next 52 years to make sure they got there. They were asked to carve out a career path that would lead them to the success they seek.

The rest of the presentation by Br Munir was just as interactive and hands on as the beginning. He went on to discuss entrepreneurial possibilities and business environment out there in Dar es Salaam and also Tanzania as a whole. Br Munir also spent a large portion of his presentation focusing on business plans and planning out entrepreneurial ventures. The key point brought up in each presentation throughout the day was “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” so Br Munir spent some time discussing how planning should take place.

The workshop ended with a closing speech from the chairman of the EEC, Br Hussein Dharsee who thanked everyone for making the workshop a success. He also went on to offer the EEC’s services to all participants throughout the course of their future entrepreneurial ventures.

The workshop was a huge success and the feedback received from participants and speakers was tremendous. The EEC would like to take this opportunity to thank the speakers for taking time out of their busy schedules and volunteering to help make this event successful. The EEC would also like to thank all participants for their high level of participation and enthusiasm during the workshop.

The EEC organised a CV writing and interview skills workshop on the 11th of September 2011 at the Tabligh auditorium. It was open to everyone in the community regardless of age or employment status. The workshop was conducted byof Genius Consulting, a consultant and trainer.

Prior to the workshop, each participant had to submit a copy of their current CV to the EEC, which was then passed on to Br Al-Junaid for review. This helped him prepare a tailor made workshop suitable to the participants’ needs and requirements. The workshop covered the types of CVs, how to write a CV, choice of wording, format of CV, basic interview questions etc. The workshop had a CV writing session where participants were asked to rewrite their CVs and compared them to their old CVs. The workshop also covered a constructive criticism session for the rewritten CVs. There was a refreshment break in between sessions where participants had the chance to network with other participants. The workshop ended at 1.30pm, an hour later than scheduled due to the length of the feedback session on the rewritten CVs.
